Making a living

(Written 2005) It may surprise many to know my 'real' job, the one that pays the everyday bills, is as a Rent Officer for Local Government. That means I contact people who are late in paying their rent and arrange payment-plans to bring the account up to date. When these are broken I apply to Court and agree terms for Court Orders, and when these are breached I apply to evict the offending tenants, attending the eviction and carrying out an inventory of goods left in the premises. The tenant is later billed, not just for the outstanding rent, but also for any costs in clearing the property and in storing any items prior to disposal.

Not a very 'Enlightening' job for an Enlightened person... is it?

The point of this is to show you there is no 'right' or 'wrong' job, other than the one you are doing. If it is disturbing you, then look to see if you can do anything about it, but until something changes, accept you are doing it until the change occurs. Otherwise you will be trapped between what is and what you want, and neither will be the truth. Sometimes we must do things the mind and emotions don't want to do, in order to learn from the experience and move on. To walk out of a situation before 'it is time' will only cut the experience short, leaving the lesson still to be learned. The only way to know whether it is 'time' or not, is to feel inside and do what seems right. The mind will always judge what it deems to be 'right' or 'wrong', but it doesn't really have a clue. What 'is', is 'right' or it could not be; but that doesn't mean it has to stay this way for ever. Things change all the time and you will learn that as you change so does your environment; this is indeed your life.

Just do what you do. Whatever you do is right, but that doesn't mean you will always have to do it.

Ps. Since creating this page, having been in debt collection for a total of 5½ years as a Rent Officer and with car finance, it was time for a change. Nick remained with the same council but in June 06 changed to a more 'positive' position of 'Neighbourhood Officer', with all the new responsibilities and challenges that go with this.

in 2016 Nick left the latter role, and the council, to take a more leisurely pace of life, and focus on writing and teaching.

The end of all experiences is simply to be...
